The Animals Need a New Shelter

New_building_interior_view-2

At 40 years old, our shelter has outlived its useful life. Although amazing work happens within its walls every day, the small size of our facility prevents best practices that could save even more lives.

We know that we can do so much more to help the animals in our community. We’re committed to placing all healthy and treatable cats and dogs by 2020. We’re close, but we simply cannot do it at our current shelter. Our kennels are too small and we are overcrowded in every area of the facility.

With a new shelter, we will be able to offer behavioral assistance to more animals and better programming for our community members. We’ll be able to meet all industry standards and best practices for animal sheltering for decades to come.

New_building_exterior_view-2Funding

Currently, we are contracted by the cities of Loveland and Fort Collins and Larimer County to perform animal control services, including sheltering. If Larimer Humane Society did not perform the contracted animal control services, the municipalities would individually or collectively need to meet those needs, including building one or more additional shelters to care for the animals.

Building a new shelter takes money that we, the City of Loveland, the City of Fort Collins and Larimer County don’t currently have. Given our current mix of contracted and non-contracted services, the funding of the new shelter will reflect that mix as well. The new facility will be funded by a mix of private and public dollars. On June 17, 2014, we handed in 22,000 signatures in hopes of putting a sales tax increase on the November 2014 ballot to raise the majority of the funds needed for a new facility. The remaining costs will be met by private dollars raised through a Capital Campaign.
