Major Objective

To assist the Department of Veterinary Services with all aspects of medical rehabilitation of animals in the shelter environment.

Duties

  • Assisting veterinary staff with daily medications and treatment of animals
  • Grooming and bathing animals
  • Reducing stress in animals housed in kennel environment term
  • Learning examination protocols
  • Learning basic in-house laboratory procedures
  • Exposure to spay/neuter facility, veterinary student rotation

Training

  • Attend volunteer orientation
  • Complete volunteer profile
  • Interview with Veterinary Department Representative
  • Attend LHS 101 training class
  • Attend WAGS animal safety and handling class prior to volunteering
  • Complete hands on department training

Commitment

Veterinary Services Volunteers must commit to one two-hour shift per week for a minimum of six months.

Volunteer Profile

Must be 18 years or age or older. Must understand realities of open admission shelter including euthanasia.
