Animal Behavior and Enrichment Volunteer Description |

Major Objective
Provide
sheltered animals with mental and physical stimulation and basic
behavior training. Assist the Larimer Humane Society staff with the
implementation of enrichment opportunities for sheltered animals. Teach
and reinforce positive behavior to adoptable animals in order to make
them more desirable companions. Directly contribute to helping animals
get homes and stay in those homes.
Duties
- Socialize, exercise, and train adoptable animals
- Produce, clean, and distribute beds and toys to sheltered animals
- Accurately and positively represent the Larimer Humane Society’s views on animal welfare issues
- Promote Society fundraising events, activities, and programs
Training
- Attend a Volunteer Orientation
- Complete Volunteer Profile
- Interview with Adoptions and Enrichment Coordinator
- Attend LHS 101 Training Class
- Attend WAGS animal handling training class
- Attend ongoing training as scheduled
Commitment
Behavior and Enrichment Volunteers must commit to 2 hours per week. Volunteers ages 10 to 15 are welcome to volunteer with a parent or relative (that is 18 or older) as part of our Partner Up Program. Volunteers 16 years or older can volunteer without a partner.
Volunteer Profile
Volunteers
must have a strong desire to improve the lives of sheltered animals.
Must have had some type of animal handling experience. Must be patient
and understanding with people and animals. Must be willing to get
dirty. Must have no allergies to animals or chemicals. Must be able to
form a strong, temporary bond with an animal and be able to work
independently on helping to acclimate it to unusual sounds, smells and
styles of interaction. Must be emotionally equipped to handle crowded
conditions and long-term residents. Must have a desire to learn and be
open to on the job training.
