Through a contractual agreement, the Larimer Humane Society provides
animal control services for Fort Collins, Loveland, Unincorporated
Larimer County, Wellington, Timnath and Berthoud. The Society's
contract for service including providing the Animal Protection &
Control Officers, transportation, a licensed animal shelter and trained
animal welfare staff as well as caring for the stray animals found in
these communities. Animal Protection & Control Officers provide a
valuable public safety service by keeping our community safe from
agressive animals and enforcing animal ordinances. In 2006 Animal
Protection & Control personnel responded to 25,938 activities.
An important component of Animal Control is the Licensing Program.
Ensuring that domestic animals are vaccinated against rabies protects
our community from this deadly virus. The Humane Society administers
the License programs for the jurisdictions. The cost of operating
animal control for a city or county is not covered by the contract
payments. Fees collected from license sales and animal impoundments
also support the Animal Protection & Control services.
Funding the Larimer Humane Society receives from the jurisdictions
is for animal control-only. Contractual income does not fund vital
animal care programs such as adoptions, medical rehabilitation, or
foster care. These programs are funded solely through donations from
individuals, fundraising and bequests.
