Major Objective

Assist in caring for all Wildkind animals, including wildlife, exotics and barnyard animals. Help maintain a clean and comfortable environment for wildkind animals. Provide the public with information regarding humane solutions to wildlife concerns.

Duties

  • Clean/disinfect housing units, feeding utensils, dishes, walls, counters and floors.
  • Prepare animals’ diets, calculate amounts, and monitor food intake. Syringe or bottle-feed animals as necessary.
  • Answer phone calls regarding wildlife concerns and send out printed materials on humane solutions.
  • Maintain impound status and medical records of Wildkind animals.

Training

  • Attend a Volunteer Orientation
  • Complete Volunteer Profile
  • Interview with Director and/or Manager of Wildkind
  • Attend LHS 101 Training Class
  • One-on-one training with Wildkind staff

Commitment

Wildkind volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and commit to at least one two-hour shift per week.

Volunteer Profile

Person with a strong commitment to wildlife rehabilitation. Previous animal handling experience preferred. Clear understanding of our philosophy that wild animals should remain wild and are rehabilitated with the goal of releasing them back into their natural environment. Able to understand and support euthanasia policy.

Direct supervision by Director of Wildkind and Manager of Wildkind, in-direct supervision by Wildkind staff.

 
Animal Care Associate PDF Print E-mail

Department: Animal Care
Classification: Full or part-time; non-seasonal or seasonal, hourly, non-exempt
Job Relationships: Supervised by the Shelter Manager, Animal Care Supervisor and/or Director of Operations and provides support to assigned volunteers 
Job Summary: Responsible for daily care of shelter animals and providing client services.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Performs daily cleaning of kennels, cages, and public areas
  • Follows disease control protocol to ensure a safe, healthy environment
  • Feeds shelter animals
  • Stocks supplies
  • Administers animal vaccinations, tests, medications and treatments as directed
  • Provides transportation of shelter animals as needed
  • Informs Veterinary Staff, Evaluation Coordinators and/or supervisor about animal health or behavior concerns
  • Educates clients on responsible animal ownership, animal care, and local ordinances
  • Provides assistance for the front desk as liason and/or adoption counseling, as needed
  • Enters data into Chameleon
  • Observes and learns the Meet Your Match program, Canine-ality and Feline-ality
  • Provides support to other associates, crewleaders and volunteers
  • Assists the Evaluation Coordinator as needed

Other Responsibilities

  • Performs euthanasia of shelter animals as assigned
  • Must become Animal Handling Certified
  • Actively supports decisions of management, Shelter Veterinarians, and the Evaluation Coordinators
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education/Experience: Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent

Knowledge: Knowledge of animal breed, behavior, and handling; Knowledge of animal health and ability to identify illness desired

Skills: Effective verbal communication skills; Able to prioritize duties and perform multiple tasks; Work in fast-paced environment

Abilities: Able to work with animals; Able to work with disinfectants and cleaning supplies; Able to perform physical work including scrubbing, mopping, lifting, walking, and bending

Other: Must be at least 21 years of age (required for insurance purposes); Valid Colorado Driver’s License and insurable driving record; Willing to perform euthanasia of animals and to become euthanasia certified within 3 months of employment

Working Conditions

Work Environment: Most work performed in animal shelter setting; Potential for exposure to zoonotic diseases and cleaning chemicals; Potential for exposure to dangerous and fractious animals; Potential exposure to high noise levels when in kennel area; Potential for animal bites and scratches while handling animals

Physical Activities: Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds; Potential for standing on feet for 8 hours a day; Driving a car; Kneeling; Cleaning cages (scrubbing); Walking dogs on a leash; Performing physical examinations on animals; Animal restraint; Handling syringes and needles

The Larimer Humane Society conducts criminal background checks and requires drug testing of all employment candidates.
