Peter W. Hellyer

Peter W. Hellyer is a member of the Board of Directors for Larimer Humane Society.  He joined the Board of Directors in May 2010.  Hellyer is Associate Dean for the Professional Veterinary Medical Program at Colorado State University in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.  In this capacity, Hellyer is responsible for the oversight of all programming within the Professional Veterinary Program and teaches a variety of courses.

Prior to assuming his position as Associate Dean, Hellyer served as the Professor of Anesthesiology in the Department of Clinical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.  Before joining the staff at Colorado State University in December 1995, Hellyer served as the Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina.  In both positions, Hellyer provided anesthesia to patients at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and taught veterinary students how to safely anesthetize a variety of animals.

Hellyer received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, his master’s in veterinary clinical sciences, and his bachelor’s in agricultural economics, all from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.  A diplomate with the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists, Dr. Hellyer’s professional interests include anesthesia and pain management of domestic animals.

Hellyer’s top priority as a Board member is to help educate the community on responsible pet ownership, particularly in regards to pain management when an animal is sick or suffering.

Hellyer lives with his wife Christina and two dogs Aspen and Emma in Fort Collins, Colorado.  Together, they have two grown daughters.
